A short action game where you as the queen ant lead the fleeing ants in a counter-attack against the invading spider.
Project Background
This was my second Game Jam that I have worked on, and was a fun but frustrating experience. The time limit this time was 1 week, with the theme “Stronger Together”.
I came up with the idea of a game where you play as a queen ant leading an army of ants to fight against a spider attacking the ant nest, as it fit the theme of stronger together very well.
Challenges along the way:
A major part of the game was making the ants move well. To create the ants I used boids which I had learned how to do in an earlier project, but translating them from a 2D environment to a 3D environment posed some problems. I spent several hours making them work, not fly into the air, actually avoid obstacles, as well as react appropriately to the queen.
Due to working solo here I had to sample assets from packages available, which taught me a lot about consistency and finding fitting tools. The art I borrowed from some packs and had to throw together the full scene in about an hour as I was running out of time. I tried to get a good sense of size as well as feel of being in a forest, but with the limited assets available it was quite hard.
